About the Burns Society of Kenya

The Burns Society of Kenya is a professional, volunteer-driven, non-governmental organization committed to reducing the burden of burn injuries in Kenya. Founded in 2016, BSK brings together healthcare professionals, public health advocates, emergency responders, partners, and communities to promote fire safety, improve burn care, and support burn survivors.


Dr Benjamin Wabwire  - Executive Chairperson

Consultant General and Plastic Surgeon

Dr. Benjamin Wabwire is a Consultant General and Plastic Surgeon with more than eleven years of experience in general and plastic surgery. He currently works at Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya. As Chairperson of the Burns Society of Kenya, he provides leadership in advancing burn prevention, improving burn care, strengthening partnerships, and supporting professional capacity building in Kenya.


Dr Evans Spanton Masitara  - Deputy Chairperson

Consultant Plastic Surgeon

Dr. Evans Spanton Masitara is a Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon who graduated from the University of Nairobi in September 2022. As Deputy Chairperson, he supports BSK’s leadership and contributes to the society’s work in burn care, reconstructive surgery, professional collaboration, and public awareness.


Dr Janan Hania Malik  - Secretary

Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon; MPH

Dr. Janan Hania Malik is a Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon with a strong background in public health. She holds an MPH in Health Systems from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and is passionate about global surgery, burn prevention, awareness, and restoring hope through reconstructive care. As Secretary, she supports coordination, communication, and organizational work within BSK..


Dr Wanjiru Mwigereri  - Treasurer

Plastic Surgery Senior Registrar

Dr. Wanjiru Mwigereri is a senior registrar in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. She has interests in clinical governance, patient safety, and health systems strengthening. As Treasurer, she supports BSK’s financial stewardship and organizational sustainability


Dr Stephen Gichuru  - Residents' Representative

Dr Stephen Gichuru is a Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery resident at the University of Nairobi and immediate former Chief Resident of the program. During his tenure as Chief Resident, he oversaw the academic, clinical, and administrative coordination of the residency program, serving as a liaison between consultants and residents while promoting mentorship, collaboration, systems improvement, and surgical excellence.

As Residents' representative to the Burn Society of Kenya, he advocates for resident engagement and collaboration in burn care, reconstruction, and education. He has additionally held several leadership positions, including National Officer of Human Rights and Peace for the Medical Students Association of Kenya and Executive Director of the Young Medical and Allied Professionals’ Foundation. In 2017, he introduced TEDx to the University of Nairobi and is a founding treasurer of the Student Surgical Forum of Kenya.


Dr  - Nurses' Representative

Patrick Kimani Mwangi represents the nursing voice within the Burns Society of Kenya. His role helps connect BSK’s work with frontline nursing practice, patient care, training, and multidisciplinary collaboration. As Nurses Representative, he supports the society’s commitment to practical, team-based burn care and improved outcomes for patients and families affected by burns.


Olive Kulola Zighe  - Secretariat

Kulola Zighe Olive serves as part of the Burns Society of Kenya Secretariat, supporting the coordination of the society’s programs, communication, partnerships, and administrative activities. She plays an important role in helping BSK organize its awareness campaigns, outreach work, stakeholder engagement, and day-to-day operations that keep the society’s mission moving forward.
