LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this session, learners should be able to:

• Name three common causes of burns at home
• Demonstrate the Stop, Drop and Roll technique
• Describe the correct first aid for a burn
• Identify two ways to prevent burns in their home

LESSON OUTLINE (45 minutes)

Introduction — 5 minutes Ask learners: Has anyone here, or someone they know, ever been burnt? What happened? Establish that burns are common, serious, and preventable.

What causes burns — 10 minutes Discuss the common causes: fire, hot liquids, kerosene, electricity, chemicals. Show or describe examples relevant to the Kenyan home — jikos, tea kettles, kerosene lamps, phone chargers.

Stop, Drop and Roll — 10 minutes Demonstrate the technique. Have all learners stand up and practise. Reinforce: stop immediately, drop to the ground, cover face with hands, roll back and forth until flames are out. Never run.

Burns first aid — 10 minutes Teach the sequence: cool with running water for 20 minutes, remove loose clothing and jewellery, cover with a clean cloth, go to hospital. Emphasise: no toothpaste, no butter, no ice.

Prevention at home — 5 minutes Discuss what learners can do at home: remind parents to keep pot handles turned inward, keep children away from jikos, store kerosene safely, never leave a lamp burning while sleeping.

Review and questions — 5 minutes Ask three learners to summarise what they learned. Distribute take-home prevention messages if available.

1. Cool with running water — 20 minutes
2. Remove loose clothing and jewellery
3. Cover with a clean cloth
4. Go to hospital
