April 15, 2024Creating National Awareness Through Fire Safety and Burns Awareness Week
The Annual Fire Safety and Burns Awareness Week is one of BSK’s most visible activities. It is a practical campaign that brings burn prevention messages directly to the public. Through this annual week-long event, BSK educates communities on fire safety, burn prevention, and appropriate first aid for burn injuries.
This campaign shows that BSK is not only talking about prevention but actively creating public awareness. Each year, the society uses this platform to remind families, schools, communities, health workers, and partners that burn injuries can often be prevented. It also creates an opportunity for different stakeholders to come together and speak with one voice on fire safety.

A Week Dedicated to Prevention, First Aid, and Public Education
During Fire Safety and Burns Awareness Week, BSK focuses on practical messages that ordinary people can understand and apply. These include safe cooking practices, safe use of electricity, careful handling of hot liquids, fire prevention at home, and what to do immediately when a burn occurs. This is important because many burn injuries happen in everyday settings, especially in homes and informal settlements.
The week also brings partners together. Hospitals, emergency responders, government agencies, humanitarian organizations, and professional groups can participate in demonstrations, talks, roadshows, media activities, and public education sessions. This makes the campaign more powerful because communities receive consistent messages from trusted institutions.
Going forward, Fire Safety Week can be made even stronger by expanding activities beyond Nairobi, involving schools and religious institutions, using radio and social media more actively, creating Kiswahili fire safety materials, and documenting the number of people reached each year. The campaign is already an established BSK activity, and with better visibility and resources, it can become a national burn prevention movement.
Conclusion
The Annual Fire Safety and Burns Awareness Week is a strong example of BSK’s work in action. It has already created public awareness around fire safety and burn prevention, and it can continue growing into a larger national platform that saves lives through education, preparedness, and early response.
Every year, BSK leads a week-long campaign to educate the public on fire prevention, first aid for burns, and safer community practices.
