Capacity Building
September 15, 2025Advocating for Safer Systems and Stronger Burn Prevention.
Policy advocacy is central to the Burns Society of Kenya’s mission because burn prevention cannot depend on awareness alone. Communities also need safer homes, better emergency preparedness, stronger fire safety standards, and coordinated public systems that protect people before injuries occur. BSK works with government agencies, hospitals, professional bodies, and response organizations to push for practical changes that reduce the risk and impact of burns.

Working With Stakeholders to Influence Fire Safety and Burn Care
Burn injuries are often linked to preventable risks, including unsafe cooking environments, household fires, electrical hazards, poor emergency preparedness, and overcrowded living conditions. These risks are especially serious in informal settlements and other vulnerable communities. BSK’s advocacy work focuses on highlighting these risks and encouraging policies that protect families, children, workers, and survivors..
The society collaborates with institutions such as the National Disaster Management Unit and other partners to support stronger fire safety policies and prevention standards. This kind of engagement helps bring burn prevention into wider conversations around disaster management, public health, housing safety, emergency response, and community education. By working with public institutions, BSK helps ensure that burn prevention is seen as a national health and safety issue.
If you want to improve patient outcomes, you cannot simply demand individuals work harder. Instead, you must redesign the workflows, technology, and environments that make up the care process
Through partnerships with hospitals, emergency response organizations, humanitarian agencies, and professional societies, BSK helps build a stronger voice for burn prevention and care in Kenya. This collective approach is important because reducing burns requires action from many sectors, including health, energy, housing, education, disaster response, and community leadership.
Conclusion
BSK’s policy advocacy work helps move burn prevention from a private household concern to a public responsibility. By influencing systems, standards, and partnerships, the society supports a safer Kenya where preventable burns are reduced and survivors receive the care and support they deserve.
Through collaboration with government agencies, including the National Disaster Management Unit, BSK advocates for stronger fire safety standards and improved burn prevention systems.
