What to do when you get a burn in Kenya – First Aid Guide
June 12, 2026Stengthening Burn Care Through Training and Knowledge Sharing
Capacity building is one of the most important pillars of the Burns Society of Kenya. Burn injuries require timely, skilled, and coordinated care, from the first response at the community level to specialized treatment in hospital. Through training, mentorship, professional forums, and partnerships, BSK works to improve the knowledge and confidence of healthcare workers, emergency responders, and other stakeholders involved in burn prevention and burn care

Empowering Health Workers to Deliver Better Burn Care
Burn care can be complex, especially when patients present with moderate or severe injuries that require urgent assessment, wound care, pain control, nutrition support, infection prevention, surgery, rehabilitation, and emotional support. For many patients, the quality of care they receive in the first few hours and days can strongly influence recovery. This is why BSK supports training that helps healthcare workers respond quickly, safely, and appropriately.
The society promotes Emergency Management of Moderate and Severe Burns training for doctors, nurses, nutritionists, and other frontline providers. These trainings help strengthen practical skills in assessing burn severity, stabilizing patients, preventing complications, and making timely referrals when specialized care is needed. By building these skills, BSK contributes to better outcomes for patients and more confidence among providers.
Beyond hospitals, capacity building supports a wider system of care. When community health workers, emergency responders, hospitals, and advocacy partners understand burn prevention and first response, communities become safer and patients receive better support. BSK’s work in this area helps connect prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and survivor support into one stronger national response.
Conclusion
Through capacity building, BSK is helping create a more skilled, prepared, and compassionate burn care network in Kenya. Every trained health worker, responder, or partner becomes part of a wider effort to save lives, reduce complications, and restore dignity for burn survivors.
BSK promotes better burn care by supporting training, knowledge sharing, and participation in scientific forums such as the Pan African Burns Congress.
